LGBTQ-INCLUSIVE TREATMENT
We actively promote an inclusive recovery environment where everyone has an opportunity to achieve lasting sobriety. We embrace our differences—in thought, style, culture, ethnicity and experience. Diversity and inclusion are vital parts of Morningside Recovery treatment for mental health and addiction as they make the community stronger. Our LGBTQ substance abuse treatment programs are here to help everyone feel included when it comes to their recovery. Without empathy and support, individuals can often feel like recovery is hopeless. Embracing each client as their own individual self will help recovery work and last.
TREATMENT FOCUSED ON NEEDS OF THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY
Following guidelines set forth by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMSHA), which state:
“A commitment should be made at every level of the program, from the board of directors to the direct line staff, to design and deliver services in a manner sensitive to the needs of LGBT individuals.”
Clinical staff is trained to work effectively with all populations, creating an environment that promotes diversity and focuses on many unique issues. LGBTQ substance abuse treatment options explore issues of sexual identity, stigma and how they relate to addiction.
Clinical staff includes CADC and CAADE-certified addiction counselors, masters-level therapists and an on-site psychiatrist, all educated in dealing with clients suffering from addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders, such as anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder.
ADDICTION AND THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY
Unfortunately, studies show that members of the LGBTQ community are at a higher risk for addiction than others. This means that the need for LGBTQ substance abuse treatment programs is in also high. But why is there an increase in risk?
Stress is often a major factor in addiction. Those within the community often feel a great deal of stress because of their sexuality. This is because of prejudice and discrimination that stems from family members, friends, and other members of society. There’s also an increase in depression, anxiety, and isolation because of the discrimination and hate that is still around today. To avoid these emotions, many will turn to substance abuse as a form of self-medication.
There’s also a significant lack of programs for the LGBTQ community. Studies show that almost 70% of facilities that claim to have LGBTQ substance abuse treatment programs are no different than other facilities. Unique programs for this community will provide treatment for the addiction as well as the necessary mental health treatment. Programs must understand the pressures and stresses individuals feel while also being welcoming and accepting.
KEY ASPECTS OF LGBTQ SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT
POSITIVE COMMUNITY
Providing a clean, safe and supportive environment gives clients the tools they need to focus solely on their recovery and steer clear of negative influences. Recovery-focused addiction therapy services and outside meetings allow them to build a strong foundation in early recovery.
PROVIDING STRUCTURE
During early recovery, it’s important to develop a routine that helps from going back to old behavior. Our LGBTQ substance abuse treatment program offers several options, including experiential therapy and adventure therapy, to help individuals to stay busy and engaged in the treatment process.
SENSE OF CAMARADERIE
During treatment, clients bond with others who share a common struggle and are seeking to better themselves. Through interacting in group therapy and outside activities, they will bond with others and feel a part of something bigger. Orange County houses one of the largest recovery communities in the world and is full of thousands of people who have found hope in recovery.
PREPARED FOR LIFE AFTER TREATMENT
Our open treatment model allows individuals more freedom than traditional treatment centers. As they progress in treatment, their clinical hours will decrease and they’ll receive more freedom to engage in constructive activities outside of the treatment facility, such as school and work. This enables them to become more self-reliant and make a smooth transition into life after they complete treatment.
