At Morningside Recovery, we strive to provide all clients with the tools, services, and programs they need to find success during treatment. Without these programs, sobriety isn’t possible. With so many possible programs, it’s important for us to discover which programs work best for each client. For those who find comfort in their faith and belief in God, a 12 step recovery program is their best option.
ABOUT THE 12 STEP RECOVERY PROGRAM
We offer clients 12 Step recovery program options based on the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous, also known as AA. Alcoholics Anonymous is an international fellowship that began 80 years ago. Its design is for the sole purpose of helping other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.
The steps used within our 12 step recovery program have been adapted to create many other recovery groups. These groups include Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA) and Heroin Anonymous (HA). They also serve as the standard for many models of addiction treatment. Since AA’s founding, these steps help millions of people achieve a lasting recovery, rebuild broken relationships and build the lives they have always wanted. The steps have even served as inspiration for other non 12 step programs like SMART Recovery.
THE 12 STEPS OF RECOVERY
The steps below are guiding principles used for treating problems including alcoholism, drug addiction and compulsive behavior:
- We admitted we were powerless over alcohol and drugs—that our lives had become unmanageable.
- Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
- Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
- Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
- Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
- Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
- Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
- Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.
- Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
- Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.
- Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
- Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics/addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
DOES A 12 STEP RECOVERY PROGRAM WORK?
While the 12 Steps are one of the most widely used methods for addiction treatment, they can rarely keep anyone sober just by themselves. These steps are guidelines for living and require people to utilize other tools if they plan on attaining long-term sobriety. 12 Step groups highly encourage regular attendance at meetings and building a solid support structure in recovery as part of an effective recovery program. Utilizing other addiction therapy services is key to achieving the lasting sobriety you deserve. The three components should be in use together, not just individually. They are all integral parts of the recovery process and continue to help many people recover from their addictions and rebuild their lives. Few people can stay sober all by themselves. Most of us will need help from others along the way.
A major benefit of the program is the reconnection an individual can make with God. When individuals struggle with addiction, they often feel as if they no longer have a connection with God. This sudden lack of faith can not only feed the addiction, it can also make recovery seem impossible. The 12 steps help individuals not only reconnect with their loved ones, but reconnect with God and ask for forgiveness. Once they feel as if they have this forgiveness, they can focus on the rest of their treatment.
While the steps in our 12 Step recovery program have been effective for some, they may not be the best solution for everyone. There are numerous other addiction treatment services that we offer that have shown to be effective when used correctly. Just like any other treatment program, it depends on how willing the person is to change. To find out more about Morningside Recovery, call 855-416-8202.
