The opioid epidemic is a growing problem throughout the United States. Prescription opioid painkillers are easily accessible as pain management, which many are now abusing. Heroin also became a popular drug of choice in recent years. With such potent drugs on the streets, it’s no wonder that the overdose rate is increasing as well. In an effort to combat this epidemic, medications and treatments such as the suboxone treatment are now available.
What is Suboxone?
Suboxone is an FDA-approved drug for medication-assisted treatment for opioid use. This medication pairs with behavioral therapy to help opioid users find recovery. This drug combines two medications to help treat addiction. Buprenorphine and naloxone are the two medications found within Suboxone. It’s important to remember that this medication alone will not stop an opioid addiction. It should assist other active treatment methods to help users stop their opioid use.
The medication comes in either a tablet to digest or a film to dissolve under the tongue. It helps to suppress the cravings, withdrawal symptoms, and the euphoria of opioids.
What is Suboxone Treatment?
Suboxone treatment is when the drug works within a treatment plan for opioid addiction recovery. Once you begin treatment at our residential detox center in Southern California, the four-stage process will begin.
The beginning phase of suboxone treatment is the induction phase. This phase is when a licensed physician supervises the use of the drug at its lowest dose during the early stages of withdrawal. This low dose will help curb cravings while not being potent enough to aggravate withdrawal symptoms.
After the first phase, the cravings will begin to subside. Once this happens, the supervising physician will be able to adjust the dosage of Suboxone.
During this phase, you will begin to participate in other portions of your treatment, like counseling or behavioral therapy. Your physician will then determine when to begin lowering the dosage of your medication. This slow wean will help make your transition smooth and lower the chances of having a relapse.
The last stage of your treatment is when aftercare takes place. This can include outpatient therapy along with group counseling sessions or 12 step meetings. Your rehab facility will help you to create your aftercare plan.
