Meditation is one of the most relaxing and special parts of my day. It certainly wasn’t easy in the beginning. The first time I tried meditation, I couldn’t focus on anything except the long list of chores I needed to do. I tried to let my thoughts fade away, but it was so hard to not worry about a million other things. With practice, it became easier. I look forward to my peaceful moments of meditation where I can relax and let my worries fade. Here are my 22 best tips for meditation.
Best Tips for Meditation
1. Choose to Meditate
This is the most important, and although obvious, meditating is a decision you have make and want for yourself.
2. Time Management
When I am not in the mood to meditate or work out, I start creating excuses. My biggest excuse is not having enough time, but if I really look at my schedule, I usually have time do more than an hour of meditation. Make the time, and it will happen.
3. Create a Space
Have a special place where you can quickly and calmly begin meditation.
4. Perfect Temperature
Your space should be the right temperature for you. People can recommend hot or cold, but it really depends on your personal preference. I like my space to be warmer than the rest of my home; it helps add a sense of peace.
5. Comfort
Bring a mat to sit on and wear clothes that let you breathe and move around comfortably. The last place you want your thoughts wondering off to is on your clothes.
6. Keep a Routine
If you truly want to do it every single day, it helps to create a routine you can easily follow. I love to do meditation in the morning right after I wake up and again before I go to bed. I have done it so often; it is as natural as getting dressed in the morning.
7. Pick the Right Music
Most people who do yoga listen to calming music with nature sounds. This allows thoughts to come peacefully and your body to relax.
8. Live in the Now
Stop worrying about past mistakes or future fears; live for today, and be who you want to be.
9. Breathe
This is the most important thing you can do during meditation. Breathing deeply fills your lungs and allows your muscles to relax. Each big breath will help your mind release thoughts and aid in concentration.
10. Enjoy Nature
Meditating is more than sitting down and breathing a few minutes during the day, it is something that can be worked on throughout your daily life.
11. Eliminate Stressors Before
It is hard to meditate if you have a long list of things you need to get done in a couple of hours. Accomplish and plan before you begin your meditation.
12. Change Priorities
Are you worried about things, money, or life accomplishments? Decide on what is most important to you in life, and leave thoughts of “things” somewhere else.
13. Practice
Meditation isn’t something that comes naturally to everyone, but with practice you will begin to look forward to it.
14. Calming Smells
Using warm aromas and calming smells makes it easier to concentrate, but also adds to a peaceful environment.
15. Work on Posture
During the day, stand tall with your shoulders back and your head straight. When you start meditating for the day, you won’t feel uncomfortable sitting and can focus on breathing instead.
16. Give to Others
When I meditate, like most people, I struggle to let my worries go and just breathe. I have found that giving to others helps me stop worrying about myself.
17. Clean the House Before
Having a clean and organized home is one of the best ways for me to really concentrate and feel a sense of freedom. A cluttered home can distract from complete meditation.
18. Walks at Night
Take a moment to look at the stars, breathe in the night air, and enjoy nature in the dark. Night time is one of the most peaceful moments in the day.
19. Surround Yourself with Positivity
You can’t even begin to meditate if you are feeling negative thoughts and emotions. Surround yourself with positive people, a safe environment, and happy thoughts.
20. Be Patient
Throughout the day, work on being patient; this will make meditating easier and more natural.
21. Stay Away from Alcohol or Drugs
Drugs and alcohol can ruin meditation and directly affect you throughout the rest of your day. Get rid of it, and enjoy the freedom of your mind.
22. Believe in Yourself
Anyone can meditate, but you have to embrace your unique qualities and what makes you, you. Meditation is a powerful force in boosting self-esteem and confidence, and you can enjoy these benefits if you believe in yourself.
