The reality of the situation is that the disease of addiction does not discriminate. It affects over 20 million Americans and some of these people even include those who are in charge of taking care of us. Drug addiction in the medical field is a serious problem and it has brought to rise programs specifically geared towards helping doctors and nurses get the help they need.
Drug Addiction in the Medical Field
In 2015, there were 107 complaints of doctors and nurses abusing drugs, a number which has since dropped, thanks to the cases being diverted to the Haven program, a nonprofit organization aiming to help medical professionals find treatment. Doctors and nurses who are caught with drug problems on the job. Since its launch in 2008, the program has grown immensely and served an estimated 466 individuals just last year, says Maureen Dinnan, the Executive Director of Haven.
Dinnan states that she is concerned about the program’s resources and their “ability to meet the demand”. Drug addiction in the medical field has managed to bring about numerous other programs such as Haven across the U.S. Many of those medical professionals who suffer from addiction will loose their license to practice medicine, due the high level of responsibility associated with their jobs.
Dinnan says this is a major problem throughout the state and hopes more of those people struggling with addiction in the medical field can find the courage to step forward if they need he help. “I would rather have someone who dedicates themselves to their treatment instead of someone who hides it,” she says.
