We never know what’s going to inspire us in our day to day lives, and we never know to what degree it will inspire us. When it comes to recovery, some people find inspiration in their loved ones, favorite celebrities, or books. For Corey Taylor, the Slipknot frontman, inspiration came from a band playing on MTV when he was 18 years old.
Celebrities and Addiction
Drug and alcohol are common topics in the music scene. Although many artists may sing about or glamorize substance abuse, many of them struggle with addiction and have to find inpatient rehab for substance abuse at some point in their careers. Many celebrities, such as Prince and Amy Winehouse, fall victim to overdose when they don’t find treatment.
However, many celebrities who successfully recover from substance abuse become advocates for getting clean and finding drug addiction treatment.
Slipknot Frontman’s Struggle With Addiction
In an interview with Loudwire, as part of Epic Rock Tales, Taylor speaks vividly about his introduction to drug addiction at a very young age and the consequences that soon followed. Taylor says that he overdosed twice by the time he was just 15. When Taylor was 18, he was taken to the hospital after his then-girlfriend found him after he swallowed a bunch of pills. He says he laid around on the couch for a while and caught MTV’s VMAs playing. This was the year Faith No More played. Taylor says “they were so good and they were so powerful and so different to anything” he had ever seen and that it really helped him get on with his life. “That’s when I started writing and making music again. So if it wasn’t for Faith No More, I wouldn’t be here.”
Since then, Taylor went on to help form one the world’s most recognized heavy metal bands, Slipknot, and another highly successful side project, Stone Sour. This wasn’t the end of the road for Taylor’s substance abuse, and he continued to drink for several more years after. According to Loudwire, he has been sober since 2003 and both of his bands continue to soar in the music scene.
