Rumis wisdom sheds light on recovery by offering simple but eloquent inspirations for everyday life. Finding your way to a sustained recovery can feel like stumbling through the dark. Many recovering addicts feel lost at first, struggling with new territory and frayed emotions. That cloud will lift in time as you work with a therapist, harness recovery techniques, and rediscover yourself. I embraced these five Rumi quotes in my recovery journey, and I hope they can shed light on yours as well.
Who is Rumi?
A poet, theologian, and mystic, Rumi was born in Persia in September 1207. He spent most of his adulthood in Turkey before his death in December 1273, but he lives on eternally through his words. You can enjoy Rumis wisdom and writings in dozens of languages. His quotes are timeless gems that can illuminate any situation. These are just a handful of my favorites!
“The wound is the place where the light enters you.”
Emotional wounds are facets of our lives that we all share in common, especially addicts. Addiction latches onto these hardships, placating the pain while imprisoning us. Recovery offers an opportunity to transform the cracks of your heart into roots for growth. Much like a window, light can spill through and radiate healing. It will take dedication and honesty in recovery to nurture your battle scars into fertile soil, but I can assure you that it is worth it a hundredfold. After all, recovering addicts are some of the most vibrant, resilient souls that I know.
“If you are irritated by every rub, how will your mirror be polished?”
I know financial challenges, strained relationships, and potential triggers can be daunting, especially if you’re fresh to recovery. These pressure points don’t have to set off a minefield of pitfalls, though. As Rumis wisdom suggests, Imagine your life is a mirror; addiction has smeared it until your own face is unrecognizable. In recovery, you’ll begin cleansing the mirror until your reflection is clear and glowing. You will reclaim yourself as you develop skills that refine adversity into clarity and purpose.
“Do not be satisfied with the stories that come before you. Unfold your own myth.”
I love to explore the stories of recovering addicts from all walks of life. They empower and educate us on the potential we all have. Despite the dazzling tales of success, we cannot deny that many of these recovery warriors do plummet into relapse. That doesn’t have to be the end of any story, and that doesn’t have to be YOUR story. You are a unique individual with your own goals, dreams, and habits. You can decide what route to take; your recovery is yours to craft and build. While your ultimate objective should always be to maintain a happy, healthy recovery, you dictate the details and determine what is best for your needs.
“You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop.”
As one of seven billion people on the planet, it is no wonder that we sometimes feel like a futile drifter. But do you know that the world within your mind is one of a kind? Your thoughts are exclusive to you. Thoughts form ideas and ideas spur into the actions that create your story. Your story is colorful, complex, and mighty, interwoven into the tapestry of life. You never know how far your thread can reach, who it will influence, and what it is capable of. Believe in yourself and respect your dreams; after all, you’re the only one who can live your life.
“Be a lamp, or a lifeboat, or a ladder. Help someone’s soul heal.”
The recovery community is thriving; it is making a lasting impact in countless lives. Once you feel rooted in your own recovery, I encourage you to reach out to others in the dark. We’ve been there, and they need us to show them that an escape is possible. We need to be an example of just how wholesome life in recovery can be. Share your story at recovery meetings, on your blog, and with friends. Go to therapy, exercise classes, or recovery meetings with someone who is struggling. By being a recovery ally, you may become the very beacon of hope that someone needs.
I hope that Rumis wisdom is as nourishing for you as they are for me. Keep them close at heart as you journey through the day, taking it one step at a time. Some paths may be dark, but we can foster a light within ourselves to guide us and others along the way.
