Players are Putting Common Sense Aside and Their Lives at Risk
Since its launch just two weeks ago, Pokémon Go has become a worldwide phenomenon, having more downloads in its first week than Tinder has had in its entire existence. Its augmented reality format changed the way we game, encouraging gamers to get outside, explore their surroundings and even socialize. Doesn’t sound so bad – until you consider just how far some players are willing to go. The game’s limitless playing field and our ongoing dependence on smartphones, have contributed to many careless players putting their lives at risk.
Warning: Danger Ahead!
Fortunately, nobody has died…yet.
On Monday, Tech News Today reported on problems stemming from Go’s compulsive gameplay. Players of all ages are getting lost in this augmented reality to the point where they’re putting themselves in harm’s way. This addictive behavior is making headlines across the country.
Since the game’s launch, there’ve been car wrecks, trespassing, muggings and stabbings, all a result of players taking the hunt to dangerous levels and being reckless. Just last week in Encinitas’ California, two men missed warning signs saying No Trespassing and Do Not Cross and walked off a cliff in their hunt for Pokémon.
The game found its way into everything from the Westboro Baptist Church (they’re not happy) all the way to some of the most dangerous places in the world (watch out for minefields in Bosnia).
Some players went into the secretive military base, Area 51. Just in case you’re wondering, they found a Sandslash, Abra, and Ponyta there.
It’s Not the Game, It’s You
In the end, it’s not the game that’s the problem. It’s the players who ignore their surroundings. The world isn’t as welcoming and friendly as what’s on your screen. Essentially, Go has many great qualities. It’s getting people outdoors, but the risks are just as broad and unpredictable as its players. In some cases, they’ll go to any lengths (even off a cliff) to become a level 30 Pokémon master. This addictive behavior puts many in danger, if they’re not careful.
That being said, if anyone decides to commit, common sense always applies. Don’t go where you’re not allowed, don’t catch and drive, and always look up.
