Addiction treatment therapy doesn’t just consist of group therapy sessions and meditation. At Morningside Recovery, residents also participate in adventure therapy activities that allow them to explore beautiful landscapes, develop new hobbies, and build team-building skills. This year, our team and residents went on a Big Bear Mountain February trip to explore the snowy summits and icy forests.
Big Bear Mountain February
About two and a half hours from Orange County, nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, is Big Bear, CA. When you arrive, the crisp cool air hits your face and it was truly refreshing. It is almost as if you are transported to another world, leaving behind the palm trees and beaches for huge trees, clear lakes, and snowy peaks.
We set off for Big Bear on Friday morning and arrived to find a sunny winter day in the mountains. We enjoyed our lunch and set out to our first adventure, horseback riding. All ten of us saddled up and explored the ranch and forest. Horseback riding was a serene experience. The horses were beautiful and gentle.
After exploring the forest, we went to our cabin near Snow Summit. We unpacked and the clients on their own took over to make dinner. This trip had a true family feel. The clients expressed their gratitude and excitement for the next day ahead of us.
Day Two: Saturday
On Saturday morning, we made it to the mountain to ski and snowboard. Each of the clients were able to find a new sense of confidence just by stepping out of their comfort zone and trying a new recreational activity.
After a full day in the sun and snow we devoured a late lunch of tasty cheese burgers and fries. “I never thought skiing and snowboarding would be such a workout!” one client exclaimed.
Later we visited Big Bear Village and walked around and the clients purchased some souvenirs. When we headed back to our cabin we were ready to settle down and relax.
The group surrounded the fireplace with fresh cups of coffee in the cozy cabin and reflected the past two days. Clients discussed their experience and favorite parts of the trip. The clients showed support for one another and it shared their plans for after treatment.
Sunday morning we got a head start and packed up all of our belongings and headed out to town. All the clients made it home safe and were very grateful to have been able to participate in such a great adventure.
