One of Morningside Recovery’s alternate addiction therapy services involves adventure trips to beautiful, scenic locations. These trips help our residents relax, face their fears, and explore beautiful environments they may not have otherwise visited. On our recent Adventure Program November trip, many of our residents returned with stories to tell and memories that will last them a lifetime.
The Benefits of Adventure Therapy
During addiction treatment therapy, many people turn to alternate or holistic methods to help them recover. At Morningside Recovery, we offer adventure therapy to help residents get out of the facility, try new activities, and visit beautiful landscapes.
Adventure therapy involves going out into nature and participating in recreational outdoor activities. This can help participants relax and enjoy nature, but it may also spark their interest in a new hobby that they can participate in after rehab. Having healthy activities and hobbies to rely on after leaving a treatment facility is crucial to relapse prevention.
Morningside Recovery’s Adventure Program November 2016 Trip
The November Adventure trip was full of courage! Stepping out on a leap of faith, Bryan D. challenged his fear of heights and rode along a 1,000 ft. zip-line 300 feet above ground! After the thrilling and tiring zip-lining day we drove to Buckskin mountain in Arizona. We stayed in a campsite that’s nestled in a valley on the Colorado River. After making camp and building a fire we BBQ’d chicken and then made Reese’s smores! Delish!
After a restful and chilly night we started hiking up the mountain close-by. The higher we got, the better the views! (Remind you of the good ol’ days? Just kidding!!) The views were breathtaking. We proceeded to mediate on top of the hill and put life into perspective.
Zip-lining, hiking, now boating! We rented a boat and drove over to Parker Dam. We floated awhile and enjoyed the environment, while after, we pulled out the inner tube and enjoyed the river! Our last night on the trip, we BBQ’d steaks and played games around the fire, enjoying the super moon without all the city lights! It was absolutely spectacular!
Overall, it was a great trip and I can’t wait to do it again!
Here is some feedback from our clients who attended this trip:
“The Adventure Program is a great way to challenge yourself and conquer your fears while having fun. With the encouragement and support of John, Linsey and my fellow clients, I faced my fear of heights the same way I face my recovery. That is by looking forward, putting my faith in my higher power knowing that he will carry me through”.

“Was super thrilled to have been chosen to participate in the weekend adventure trip!! We all got to go zip lining, hiked in the desert, and floated on the Colorado River! Talk about good times and some well-deserved R&R because that was exactly what the doctor ordered. Can’t wait for the next one on snow!”
