Holistic therapy is a natural approach to overcoming addiction that involves mind, body, and spirit. This blog covers holistic ways to fight addiction and become a stronger person.
When I was in high school, I remember walking to class on the very first day of school. The first thing our teacher did was hand out a test. I groaned quietly to myself, but then, I began reading the questions. They were about my personality; this test was fun! When everyone completed the test, our teacher explained that the results would give her an idea of how we all learn. Some students were auditory learners, others intrapersonal or interpersonal. I discovered that day that I was a kinesthetic learner; I learn best by moving and using my hands. As a therapist, I have found that people not only learn uniquely, but they recover and overcome addictions differently, too. If there was one remedy for everyone, then you can guarantee that addictions would be nonexistent. Our bodies are complicated, and we respond to situations and treatments in diverse ways.
Seven Holistic Ways to Fight Addiction
Raw Foods Diet
Diet plays a direct role in our health. Processed foods are everywhere, and if you take a moment to read the labels, you will be shocked to find what’s in the ingredients. There are so many unhealthy chemicals that disrupt the body’s systems. When you eat raw foods, you can guarantee your body is only getting the best. This will strengthen your body, boost your energy, and keep your mind alert. A change in diet might be that extra lift to get you over your addiction.
Hypnotherapy
The mind is powerful. If you are constantly sending yourself negative signals, then the response is going to be negative. Hypnotherapy is a relaxing method of sending positive affirmations and words of encouragement to the mind. It boosts your self-esteem and reassures you of what you are already capable of. Studies have found that those who use hypnotherapy during therapy have longer periods of abstinence than those who do not.
No Sugar
Sugar is definitely tasty, but it can also be very addictive. The body can crave sugar as strongly as drugs, and eliminating it from your diet can be a way to train the mind how to overcome addiction.
Exercise
Exercise is a healthy way to get your blood flowing, heart pumping, and necessary chemicals produced. Addictions can throw the chemicals your brain produces out of whack. As you exercise, the body will begin to rebalance and fix things naturally.
Acupuncture
Drug addicts suffer from painful withdrawal symptoms, and acupuncture is one way to lighten the pain and make it more manageable.
Massage
Massages are amazing. They loosen the muscles and help your mind relax. As you get a massage, take the time to work through difficult things. What were factors that led to your addiction? With a massage relaxing you, your body and mind can work together in a therapeutic way to overcome deeper issues.
Meditation
Finding a quiet place and taking a moment to breathe is a relaxing way to strengthen the spirit. Combine this meditation with yoga and your body will be working, too. My meditation time is not just about breathing; it builds my confidence and reassures me of my chosen path.
