Psychological Treatment

A quick Google search shows that there are literally hundreds of drug and alcohol treatment centers out there. And many of them claim they’re willing to “accept” dual diagnosis clients – those with mental issues that need to be addressed in conjunction with their particular addiction.

But at Morningside Recovery in Newport Beach, California, psychological treatment is at the essence of all that we offer. Morningside is the premier dual diagnosis center in California. Truth be told, most recovery treatment programs are not institutionally equipped to consider each diagnosis as a primary diagnosis and provide the requisite care. For those who suffer psychological disorders that might be more prominent that their substance abuse, finding an appropriate facility to resolve those issues can become a daunting proposition.

What sets us apart from the rest of the recovery crowd is our health care professionals. Morningside Recovery is fully staffed with licensed therapists and psychologists. All of the clinical work conducted at Morningside is supervised by a consulting clinical psychologist who has many years of experience in behavioral healthcare.

Clients at Morningside receive intensive one-on-one psychotherapy using the most progressive clinical techniques available to provide stabilization and, eventually, recovery. In addition to individual psychotherapy, we also provide comprehensive psychological testing to each incoming client. These testing tools provide the clinical team with a baseline of psychiatric function and a complete snapshot of the clinical issues that our new clients face. This snapshot enables the clinical team to formulate an individualized treatment plan from which to begin work.

Above and beyond individual therapy and testing, Morningside Recovery provides group psychotherapy. This is of paramount importance for our clients, enabling them to begin to explore their issues in a group setting. It is in such groups that our clients receive supportive feedback as well as critical assessment of their problems from people who suffer the same addictions or diagnoses.

Morningside Recovery recognizes that those suffering from alcoholism or drug addiction, along with another mental disorder, have their own set of unique problems, all of which deserve exclusive rehabilitation and different approaches to therapy. Morningside Recovery offers a range of treatment programs to confront issues about the client’s addiction and dual diagnosis.

Among the psychotherapies utilized at Morningside is cognitive behavioral therapy. This process helps those with dual disorders to “unlearn” their unhealthy thinking process, replacing those thoughts with healthier goals and ideas.

Cognitive behavior therapy is a combination of cognitive therapy and behavioral therapy. Behavioral therapy helps the co-diagnosed client to debunk the negative thought process regarding fears and depression, replacing such thoughts with positive reinforcement. Through psychotherapy, the clients learn how to quiet themselves in order to think rationally, dispel bad thoughts that have no place in reality, and to make better decisions.

Cognitive therapy explores the client’s often-distorted thinking process – those things that are causing the particular disorder and/or addiction. Combined, the two therapies provide clients with the tools they need to focus on the “here and now” and learn to end destructive behavior and get on with a more satisfying life.

Studies have shown that one of every two people having a severe mental illness also have a substance abuse problem. Those suffering from a mental illness use drugs and alcohol for the same reasons as those who use without a mental illness, but in many cases the effects of drug and alcohol use for those with a mental disorder are more sensitive. Morningside Recovery offers specialized treatment when dealing with those suffering from co-occurring disorders, providing information, education and understanding to both individuals and their families during recovery.

Morningside Recovery has several private drug rehab facilities located throughout Newport Beach and adjoining Costa Mesa, all of which are staffed 24 hours a day. The average stay for dual diagnosis treatment is 90 days, with a minimum 30-day commitment to be accepted into our community.
