Transitional Living Programs
Next-steps in Recovery

Morningside Recovery’s transitional living is much more than mere “sober living.” We support all forms of recovery, including clients transitioning back into the workforce after inpatient treatment for chemical dependency, clients embarking on an academic journey, clients recovering from psychosis, and clients who simply know that the longer they stay in treatment, the better the chance of remaining healthy long-term. Our transitional living program is designed both for clients discharging from an inpatient program, as well as those who are clinically appropriate for this level of care.

Numerous research studies have proven the long-held observation that the longer a client remains in treatment, the stronger their recovery. At Morningside Recovery, we’ve built upon this concept to provide world-class transitional living. For instance, a study conducted at the University of California at Irvine compared clients in a traditional 90-day recovery treatment program to those in a program that combined treatment with academics. The researchers concluded that those who participated in the college program had a significantly higher success rate. Thus, a big part of transitional living is the Morningside Academic Institute (MAI). This young adult program, not excluding the young at heart, is designed to meet the client where they paused in their academic pursuits and guide them towards resuming and achieving academic goals.

The Morningside Academic Institute curriculum consists of balancing therapy and academics in a way that supports maximum success. MAI staffers have extensive experience and knowledge regarding how to mesh local academic programs with recovery treatments. We have proven that academic goals can support and reinforce treatment goals. Clients in the MAI program stay a minimum of a school semester or quarter; however, there’s no time limit and many choose to stay an additional semester. Those clients who stay local typically chose to continue in the MAI outpatient program for an additional semester or beyond for a continuum of academic support.

Individuals transitioning to a college program or joining the workforce succeed because it gives them hope, direction, and self-esteem.

Moreover, clients maintain contact with case managers and therapists who:

In keeping with Morningside's evidence-based approach to treatment, we recognize that recent studies suggest that more than half of all clients involved in a 30-day (or less) residential treatment program relapse within the first year. However, the story is quite different for those who participate in long-term treatment with a transitional component; of this group, approximately 85 percent of clients were still clean going into their second year. In Morningside's transitional living program, a typical day might see a client participating in a morning group before hitting the computer lab to get help polishing their resume. Clients are kept busy with either working (or seeking employment), school or vocational training. Morningside Recovery believes it is during transitions that the hard work, determination, and perseverance can lead to client success.
