Having helped male and female clients from all over the world, we are proud of the difference our coed program has made in their lives and the lives of their families. Our clinical staff has developed a variety of coed programs which are supportive — treating men and women with the dignity they deserve. No two clients, whether male or female specifically, will have identical backgrounds, and both our drug rehab programs and mental health treatment therapies draw strength from the gender diversity of Morningside clientele. Oh, and our gender diversity is proven-out by our absolutely fantastic coed team of recovery professionals.

Morningside’s interdisciplinary staff is deeply knowledgeable and experienced in dealing with coed therapy populations, in recovery and treatment. As clients step forward through their phases of recovery, men and women maintain realistic social interactions with the opposite sex. Clients examine their own thinking, even long-standing gender biases, discovering that many addictive behaviors are so often related to coed relationship issues, and clients also learn how male/female interactions can be triggers, as in the old saying, “My wife/husband or girlfriend/boyfriend makes me drink.”

Another benefit of co-ed treatment is the fact that clients often become much better equipped to return to a more positive intimate relationship when they leave our treatment center. Treatment approaches that erase gender-gaps not only maintain a much more realistic setting for sincere dialogue, but such real-life settings can be a key source of realistic motivation to change behavior. The shared recovery experiences can be eye-opening in therapeutic ways that gender-specific groups might just lack for many clients. This maintenance of a realistic setting is also a big part of treating co-occurring/dual diagnosis disorders: too often, only one of the two problems is treated (i.e., addiction, along with mental health). At Morningside, we deal with all issues in as realistic a setting as possible, while still maintaining a safe, secure environment free from diversions or temptations that might derail any client’s recovery treatment.

As co-ed clients move through their respective, unique treatment tracks, many benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which assists clients in recognizing anxious feelings and actual physical reactions to anxiety. CBT helps clients clarify their thinking in anxiety-provoking situations, to identify unrealistic expectations and develop a game-plan to help cope with uneasy or disturbing situations. Clients determine which coping actions might be effective, evaluate their own performances and responses, and explore self-reinforcement as appropriate. Co-ed behavioral training strategies also include modeling real-life situations, role-playing, relaxation training, and contingency (read: “what’s my escape plan?”) planning and management.

Throughout the sessions, clients practice the new skills in both imaginary and real-life situations varying from low stress to high stress, depending on what is appropriate for each client.

Treatment staff monitors each client’s progress and helps with strategies and plans. Later phases integrate employment and/or school activities into the client’ss treatment plan. Clients begin accepting responsibilities in the community and begin making the gradual transition from the program to the community. The client learns to balance daily activities with his or her path towards recovery.
