Mental Illness Treatment

If you have a mental illness, you have a medical condition that disrupts your thinking, your feelings, your moods and your ability to relate to others and to function on a day-to-day basis. Mental illnesses are biologically based brain disorders that have absolutely nothing to do with a person’s character, upbringing or intelligence. And the symptoms cannot be reduced and the illness cannot be conquered through willpower.

But stabilization, recovery and relief from the symptoms of mental illness are distinct possibilities with the proper diagnosis and treatment plan, according to The National Alliance on Mental Illness. NAMI reports that between 70 and 90 percent of those who undergo a combination of pharmacological and psychosocial treatments show significant reduction in their symptoms.

That’s where Morningside Recovery comes in. We treat the diagnosis of mental illness as a primary diagnosis, and we provide a broad interdisciplinary team to assist with stabilization and recovery from mental illness. Our program encompasses a wide range of clients who suffer from a wide range of illnesses. Among these are:

At Morningside Recovery, we use modern and progressive approaches utilizing the psychosocial rehabilitation model of treatment for clients with mental illness. We believe clients should participate in the development of their treatment plan and take responsibility for their mental health recovery. Mental health diagnosis is not a destiny, it’s just a beginning to a path of recovery.

Morningside provides psychological and psychiatric assessment, medications to assist with symptoms associated with mental illness and ongoing medication management to ensure proper efficacy of prescribed medications. In addition, we provide non-pharmacological symptom-management training so that clients are able to develop skills to identify and manage fluctuations of their symptoms.

Most recovery programs will not admit clients with a single mental health diagnosis. But people need to be treated for their mental health, and we can do that in a residential treatment center because we have a strong staff working in psychiatry and mental health medicine.

First off, clients receive an extensive assessment to ensure that a recovery setting is the level of care they require. If you need pre-admission stabilization, that is provided and, following that assessment, you receive more in-depth psychiatric and psychological testing to determine a baseline level of psychiatric functioning. From there, a treatment plan is initiated.

It is at this stage that you are introduced to the residential treatment program where, in addition to pharmacological management, you receive psychosocial treatment such as individual therapy, group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, peer support groups – including those based on 12-step programs -and other components of our treatment curriculum.

When it comes to seeking professional help, here are the choices: Without help, your mental illness will continue to plague you. Among common problems associated with mental illness are joblessness, imagined disabilities, alcohol and drug abuse, social actions that are seen as inappropriate by friends and family, and thoughts of taking your own life.

This personalized program of recovery, when conducted in conjunction with effective medication, can give you a life that is independent of your illness.
